Lisa Englund receives the award for her exquisite tapestries that reveal enchanted worlds of myths and symbols, inspired by Swedish nature.
As recipient of the 2025 Beckers Art Award, Lisa Englund – also known as LIEN in the art world – was awarded a grant of SEK 200,000 and solo exhibitions at Färgfabriken, Stockholm and KKAM Höganäs. These two exhibitions will be her first major solo exhibitions.
Lisa Englund receives the 2025 Beckers Art Award for her exquisite textile sense of colour and the singularity and tenacity of her visual narratives. In short: Lisa Englund is honoured for her unique art of painting with wool.
“The tapestries emerge intuitively as stories about things that move me emotionally and want to be expressed,” explains Lisa Englund. “I often explore themes around holiness, myths and symbols.”
In her artistic process, she searches in the forest for mushrooms and plants to dye the yarn, wool and linen that she uses to create her tapestries. The dyeing process is a way for her to transfer the magic of the forest into her artistic material. The seasonal materials she can find are reflected in her work through the colours she uses.
“It varies quite a lot how long it takes me to complete a tapestry,” says Lisa Englund. “For some of my recent work that will be displayed at the Färgfabriken and KKAM Höganäs exhibitions, I took inspiration from tarot cards and snakes among other things.”
The motifs and themes included in her work also show contrasts between culture/nature, sacred/profane and human/animal.
The exhibition at Färgfabriken, Stockholm, runs from 1 February to 6 March and is relocated to KKAM Höganäs, where the exhibition is open between 3 May - 1 June.
Born in 1993, Lisa Englund lives and works in Stockholm. She graduated in 2023 with a master’s degree in textile art from the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design.
